EPSILON MU CHAPTER AT BUTLER UNIVERSITY
To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth.
To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart and character.
To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity.
Founded on May 7, 1926, the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Butler
University prides itself on a local and national history of sustained excellence. The
origins of our chapter are traced back to an even older fraternity chapter at Butler, a
Delta Phi Sigma colony founded in 1923, which would soon after its own founding petition
the National College Fraternity of Sigma Nu for affiliation in 1925. With the support of Sigma
Nu chapters across the country, as well as the entire existing Greek community at Butler, the
Epsilon Mu Chapter received its charter in 1928. The chapter has moved its home several times
around campus, including on Capital Avenue, the current Center for Faith and Vocation, the current
Sigma Chi Chapter House, and on the Christian Theological Seminary campus. Then, in the fall of 1959, the
Epsilon Mu Chapter House moved to the southwest corner of campus at 4400 Haughey Avenue, where it is occupied today.
Throughout the late 1990’s, the chapter faced dwindling recruitment numbers, a lack of academic focus, and minimal campus
involvement, and as a result, the Epsilon Mu charter was revoked by the national fraternity in 1998 with the intent of soon recolonizing
the chapter with renewed purpose. Butler’s chapter of Sigma Nu returned to campus in 2002, successfully recruiting mostly Lilly Scholars
who would lay the foundation of academic excellence still maintained today. Since recolonization, the Gentlemen of Sigma Nu have been recognized locally with over 30 annual campus Greek Excellence Awards each spring, and the chapter’s excellence has been recognized nationally
with three consecutive Rock Chapter Awards, the highest level of chapter recognition by the national fraternity, over a period of six years (2008, 2010, 2012). The nicknamed “SNU's” to this day still host many of the campus’ most anticipated philanthropic traditions, including VOODOO every Halloween and SNUPERBOWL, powderpuff football in the spring. After over 85 years on campus, the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Sigma Nu at Butler University has initiated over 1,500 Knights who have learned to apply the values of Love, Truth, and Honor. Active and alumni brothers alike strive to live each day by the Fraternity’s motto, "Excelling with Honor."
